Research Overview
The main focus of our group is understanding how galaxies form and evolve using observations from both space and ground-based observatories. By providing superb observations over a range of wavelengths, space-based facilities such the Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope as well as ground-based facilities such as the Very Large Telescope continue to drive progress in this field. This multi-faceted approach is essential for separating the nature versus nurture aspect of galaxy evolution. The advantage of being at the ITP is having close ties with the theoretical astrophysics group lead by Prof. Ben Moore; we are thus better able to connect theory to observations. Here are some recent and ongoing projects that are being lead by members of our observational research group:
- Stellar Assembly in SG1120, a Super-Galaxy Group at z=0.37
- A Keck Spectroscopic Survey of MS 1054-03 (z=0.83): Forming the Red Sequence
- The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA)
- Properties of the low mass dwarf galaxies discovered in the ALFALFA survey
- Geometrical tests of cosmological models based on the kinematics of high-redshift galaxies
- Globular Cluster Systems of Elliptical Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
- The Fraction of Barred Galaxies as a Function of Environnment
- Finding the Oldest Galaxies in the Local Universe using Spectral Indices
